On #WorldEnvironmentDay, we celebrate India's rich natural heritage and reaffirm our commitment to conservation. Home to over 70% of the world's wild tigers, India has emerged as a global leader in wildlife conservation through sustained efforts in habitat protection, species recovery, technology-driven monitoring, and community participation. Tiger reserves not only secure the future of our national animal but also conserve critical ecosystems that support biodiversity, water security, carbon sequestration, and climate resilience. #WorldEnvironmentDay2026 #TigerConservation #ProjectTiger #AmritKaalKaTigerVision2047 Photo Credit- Dr. G.S. The All India Tiger Estimation (AITE), launched in 2006, is conducted once every four years and has completed five successful cycles so far. Recognized by the Guinness World Records as the world's largest camera trap wildlife survey, AITE has transformed wildlife monitoring in India. Beyond estimating tiger numbers, it provides critical insights into the status of co-predators, prey populations, habitat quality, and landscape connectivity. The information generated through this exercise plays a vital role in guiding conservation planning, strengthening management interventions, and addressing emerging challenges across India's tiger landscapes. #NTCA #ProjectTiger #AITE6 #AmritKaalKaTigerVision2047 @PMOIndia @moefcc @wii_india @MSTrIPES @PIB_India @EnvironmentPib @IBCA_official @Unitedfortigers

Every four years, one of the largest wildlife monitoring exercises in the world unfolds across India's forests. Thousands of forest personnel, researchers and conservationists work across vast landscapes to estimate the population of tigers, co-predators, prey and their habitats. As the 6th All India Tiger Estimation is underway, let us explore the science, technology and fieldwork that make this remarkable exercise possible. #NTCA #ProjectTiger #AITE6 #AmritKaalKaTigerVision2047 @PMOIndia @moefcc @wii_india @MSTrIPES @PIB_India @EnvironmentPib @IBCA_official @Unitedfortigers

Indeed a great loss. His legacy and values will always live on in our hearts.
The Wildlife Institute of India mourns the passing of Dr. H. S. Panwar, our Founder Director, whose vision, leadership, and unwavering commitment laid the foundation of wildlife science and conservation in India. A pioneering conservationist, Dr. Panwar helped shape a scientific approach to wildlife management, inspired generations of conservation professionals, and strengthened the nation's resolve to protect its natural heritage. His contributions extended far beyond institutions, leaving an enduring impact on India's wildlife, protected areas, and conservation policy. As we bid farewell to a remarkable mentor and leader, we remember with gratitude his wisdom, dedication, and lifelong service to conservation. His legacy will continue to guide and inspire us. May his noble soul rest in peace. @moefcc @wii_india @SACONCoimbatore @IGNFA_GoI @IcfreIndia @ForestSurvey @GobindsagarBha1 @RuchiBadola2 @gopigv @paragnigam09 @AnukulNath4 @jajohny2013 @nehrutp @sureshwii @amarjeet_kaur10 @sutirthadutta82 @varun_kher @saini_tapendra @cramesh_WII @wildwithwolves @skg4wii @V_kolipakam @ModiShrushti @muliya_sanath @ashishdurg @RiteshGautamWII @kramesh95 @Himalayanwolf1 @lifeofawild @lalanikawlni @thegrassyfish @amitwii

Project Cheetah continues to demonstrate encouraging progress, with the population reaching 53, including 33 Indian-born cubs. Strong survival rates, successful acclimatisation, and expansion across landscapes such as Kuno and Gandhisagar highlight the effectiveness of scientific management and reinforce the project’s long-term conservation potential. #NTCA #ProjectCheetah @PMOIndia @moefcc @wii_india @MSTrIPES @PIB_India @EnvironmentPib @IBCA_official

Leopards are among the most unique and adaptable big cats- thriving in forests, grasslands, mountains, and even near human settlements. In India, their resilience is remarkable: as per the 2022 estimate, tiger landscapes support ~70% of the country’s leopard population- estimated 13,874 individuals. While leopard numbers across these landscapes are largely stable, 67% live in areas adjoining tiger reserves, highlighting the critical role of shared habitats and connected landscapes in securing their future. #AmritKaalKaTigerVision2047 #NTCA @PMOIndia @moefcc @wii_india @mstripes @PIB_India @EnvironmentPib @IBCA_official @Unitedfortigers

A significant milestone for Gujarat! For the first time, a Training of Trainers workshop for the All India Tiger Estimation 2026 was conducted at Jambughoda Wildlife Sanctuary, bringing together over 100 participants from across the state. The workshop focused on strengthening the capacity of frontline forest officers through comprehensive training on AITE protocols. Participants were equipped with essential ecological monitoring techniques, including sign surveys and line transect methods for estimating tigers, co-predators, and prey species. In addition, hands-on sessions were conducted on the use of the M-STrIPES mobile application, enabling accurate, real-time data collection and monitoring in the field. #AITE6 #NTCA #AmritKaalKaTigerVision @GujForestDept @wii_india @MSTrIPES @PMOIndia @moefcc @PIB_India @EnvironmentPib @IBCA_official @Unitedfortigers
