I’ve been thinking on this. We need to clean house, and I don’t mean throw people out, but follow an Aristotlean guideline for a unified society.
1) Aristotle would say that excessive dissimilarity breeds division. We need to prioritize shared language, civic values, history, and a common way of life. English official language, perhaps? How about mandatory government service for a year after high school? No excuses and no getting out for rich, connected kids. They live in dormitories together in a disciplined environment and focus on public safety, first aid, infrastructure projects for their year.
2) Education for Virtue: The polis shapes character through habituation. Reform the schools to cultivate rational, just citizens. We probably need to tear down and rebuild the Department of Education.
3) Political Friendship: Laws and institutions should build mutual goodwill, not just manage conflict. There can be no two-tier justice, and the two parties need to stop feeding dialogues that are inflammatory and feed Stochastic terrorism and violence. Mandatory fines against elected officials and bureaucrats who use inflammatory and divisive language while speaking in an official capacity may be necessary. We also need to end the power of NGOs that divide us.
4) Prudential Federalism: Different communities can vary, but the overarching regime needs enough cohesion for self-sufficiency and the good life. Let California be California, but do not allow them to dictate elections by refusing to ensure only living citizens vote — once. Federal government access to voter records and aid distributions for audit purposes, is essential.
5) Avoid Extremes: Neither forced universal mixing nor total fragmentation; aim for a workable middle. Let people live in the neighborhoods they like. Let lesbians have their groups and exclude men who want to be women. Public areas, however, belong equally to all, for similar use. Singapore is a densely populated country with several cultures and religions coexisting peacefully. We might learn a few things from them here.
