ALT 📸 Baskets for the Grape Harvest Estreito de Câmara de Lobos | Late 20th century. An image that says so much about strength, tradition, and hard work in Madeira. With impressive skill, this man balances a remarkable load of wicker baskets — the classic baskets used during the grape harvest. They were carried this way, on the head and shoulders, along the island’s paths and levadas, often from the steepest vineyards down to the wine presses or roads. Estreito de Câmara de Lobos, with its green slopes famous for grape production (especially Malvasia and other varieties), was the setting for this scene for many decades. Today, mechanization and modern transport have made the work much easier, but this photograph preserves the memory of a time when human strength and ingenuity were the main tools of the harvest.
