Every Call Carries Risk
On Tuesday, May 12, 2026, Officer Blake Ferry and Officer DeLeon, assisted by Sergeant Gennetti, responded to a medical aid call in the area of the 300 block of Broadway in Malden.
Upon arrival, the officers encountered a resident of Saugus (47-year-old) who appeared to be suffering from an unknown medical condition, possibly related to the use of a controlled substance suspected to be fentanyl.
During the investigation, officers discovered a significant quantity of suspected fentanyl on the individual and in close proximity to the location where he was reportedly staying. Unbeknownst to the responding officers at the time, the bag containing the substance had become unsecured, and a portion of its contents had been dispersed onto the individual and into the surrounding air.
The officers took the necessary precautions and were not injured.
This incident serves as an important reminder to all first responders to remain vigilant when interacting with individuals who may be in possession of controlled substances. Always be mindful of what you are touching and aware of your immediate surroundings. Hazards are not always visible, and situational awareness is critical to ensuring everyone goes home safely at the end of the shift.
Stay safe and be well, Malden!
