This image is horribly misleading!!! Firstly, I'm a lot more grey than that, I tend to wear glasses most of the time, I can barely grow a full stubbly beard and that waistline is far too flattering! But thankfully, all the comments are genuine and were sent to me today following a conference session I ran recently 😃 So I thought I'd share this as a reminder that next year, I’m opening up more slots for bespoke school support in primary and secondary maths. I would be delighted to support schools with short or long term projects across all things maths and could include: - Maths department reviews - Cross-phase transition work - Instructional coaching - Curriculum and pedagogy development - Evidence-informed implementation - Maths leadership development - Staff training and conference delivery - Bespoke CPD (I've now got free slots for 31st August and 2nd September too if you want to launch the school year with me!) Could I ask people to share this with anyone you think may be interested! I'm based in West Midlands / Worcestershire but getting ready to do a little more travelling (I should be in Dubai a few times next year too!) Exciting times ahead! :)

What do we mean when we say placeholder? My latest blog on a word that I hear used without meaning far too regularly... open.substack.com/pub/tomman…

This was great fun to deliver and was a great day overall!
We’re back for the afternoon! 🙌 Tom Manners had the room buzzing on Strategies to Prevent Misconceptions - why they arise, how to bust them, and a modelling framework to take straight back to school. #MathsCPD #MathsTeaching #DaisyEducationMathsSummit #MathsLeadership

I am proud to share that an article of mine ("Fixing the mathematics transition from primary to secondary") has been published in "Mathematics Teaching" from the @amieMathematics- this is the first issue of MT since the bringing together of several long-standing mathematics education bodies in the UK (I don't know if that makes this issue a collector's item or not, but I felt compelled to share this tidbit!) My article is freely available to all lnkd.in/ebujM82Y - please do share with anyone that you think would be interested, especially anyone involved with the Year 5-8 continuity work groups from the @NCETM . I am so pleased that I challenged myself this academic year to write more (and I intend to re-start my Substack blogs soon... ideas are forming all the time!)

It's Xmas decorating day in the Manners house! Thought this tree would be a good hook for two of my favourite prompts in maths classes "What do you notice? What do you wonder?" (wrote a blog on them if you missed it - open.substack.com/pub/tomman…)

I don't enjoy controversy but I am nervously dipping my toe in... Is primary maths teaching more effective than secondary? I make some conjectures, pose some questions and consider some evidence in an attempt to develop coherence and encourage cross-phase collaboration. open.substack.com/pub/tomman…

Given what I have been writing about recently surrounding primary and secondary practice, I thought I would share this blog that I wrote initially for the EEF on prompts used in the primary classroom that could be used in all mathematics classrooms. What do you notice? What do you wonder? tommanners.substack.com/p/wh…

I'm a pedant when it comes to using the right mathematical language and also working with staff to script unambiguous expositions! So I've wanted to focus on this mathematical word for a long time as I think it creates confusion (or certainly has the potential to do so!) Times! I know people give me different answers to this but what does 3x7 mean exactly.... and does it matter? I hope you enjoy reading! Do please share with anyone you feel may be interested (and anyone who may want to contribute!) open.substack.com/pub/tomman…

"Excellence in maths will provide the problem-solvers of tomorrow." - a line that shone out from the Government's response to the Curriculum and Assessment Review. So how do we create the problem-solvers? Developing the behaviours of a mathematician! Here's part 2 of a story from this week of how a group of year 6 teachers challenged pupils undertaking a problem and how they focused on the skills and strategies needed to problem-solve. open.substack.com/pub/tomman…

The timing feels somewhat perfect! I had undertaken a fascinating lesson cycle study with a group of teachers looking at creating a problem-solving lesson and I thought it would be worth blogging about…. And then the first headlines for the Curriculum reform were shared! So here you go! Here’s part 1 of 2 (the second of which will be uploaded tomorrow) tommanners.substack.com/p/wh…

Given it is half-term and I struggle to switch off at the best of times, I decided to not write a blog this week! So instead I asked ChatGPT to summarise what I have writing about last half-term in my blogs on tommanners.substack.com 👌Tom Manners writes pedagogical-focused blog posts, with a strong emphasis on: 🤌Maths teaching and learning (tools, talk, showing workings) 👍The transition between primary and secondary education (especially maths) 👊How school systems, class groupings, teacher collaboration, and student behaviours all interact around these issues 🙏A consistent interest in equity and how practice across phases can better support students. Here's to more next half-term!!🍾 Feel free to share with anyone you think would find them interesting 😁
