You appointed Secretary Doug Collins to lead the VA and put “Veterans First.” A Marine combat Veteran was recently denied palliative care at the Phoenix VA Health Care System. This is not an isolated incident — Veterans are reporting a growing pattern of cases involving denial of adequate chronic pain management, hospice, and palliative care for combat-injured and terminally ill veterans. One Veteran described the reality on the ground: “He’s so afraid of being labeled with opioid addiction that he drinks heavily and buys street drugs just to make it through the day with the pain.” This is what happens when VA pain management fails — Veterans are left choosing between unbearable suffering and dangerous self-medication.
