It's right for lawmakers to insist that repeat offenders be punished more than first-timers, but this was already the case. First, Iowa had a 3-year mandatory minimum on the third strike before this 7-year one. Second, Iowa already had offense-specific repeat enhancements. 4/5

๐ฃYesterday, the Senate unanimously passed my Carla Walker Act, which creates a pilot program to support forensic genetic genealogy DNA analysis and helps solve cold cases.
This bill was named after Carla Walker, a Fort Worth native, whose case went cold for 46 years. Thanks to forensic genetic genealogy, her murderer was caught, tried, & convicted in 2021.
Iโm proud to have championed this legislation & look forward to seeing it pass the House soon.
