The happiest place in New York on Monday was the Hudson Theater, where Maria Friedman gave a one-night benefit concert that convinced you, for as long as she sang, that musicals could save the world. Now how can I get to sleep with all these endorphins still flooding my brain?

The idea that time is an illusion breaks my brain.
There are many weird ideas in physics, but that one... that, as Einstein said, "distinction between past, present & future is an illusion" is just too weird.
The arrow of time seems fundamental to my cognition, but maybe not?

Had the great fortune to revisit Maria Friedman's production of "Merrily We Roll Along," at NYTW. I'm struck again by the emotional power she elicited in staging it as a memory play. And how Groff, Mendez and Radcliffe tap Sondheim's greatness as a palimpsest portraitist in song.

I saw the 2013 West End transfer of this production of Merrily for £25 and sat seven rows from the stage.
