Could June do a May? A frustratingly cool, wet miserable period driving the month below average followed by strong heatwave flipping the anomaly the other way? (Unlikely to be as extreme!) Focus SE UK/Nr Cont Here's past 7-days & June thru 13th vs upcoming Day 4-11 period.

Historically when a (very) strong El Niño has been developing, already reaching the moderate threshold in June, that month has tended to be notably prone to unsettled, wet weather in northern Europe, especially the northwest. June 2026 looks to be following that template.

This would nicely fit my summer idea.
The latest seasonal forecast model blend suggests a notably hot & extended summer for central & western Europe including southern UK. Bearing in mind that the location of peak anomalies varies between contributing models, seeing such a large area of at least 1°C is noteworthy.

7 out of 10 models now predict a record-breaking El Niño this year. El Niño's exact intensity will influence the magnitude of the global temperature spike and water vapor levels in 2026-27, both key indicators of the potential for weather extremes. Fractions of a degree matter.

El Niño is officially here. NOAA just announced its arrival. "There is a 63% chance of a very strong El Niño during November-January that would rank among the largest El Niño events in the historical record going back to 1950," they wrote.

A lot of talk about the 'mysterious' cold blob SE of Greenland = possible slow-down of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) - which is a massive ocean current that keeps western Europe warm in winter, an interesting recent article below👇 agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.…

June is already wetter than average now in Dublin. 67.4mm of rain in the first 7 days compared to 1991-2020 full month average of 64.0mm (105%). Have to go back to 1958 (79.7mm) to find a wetter first 7 days of June and 1955 (83.0mm) was the only other one wetter.
