German or Flanders longsword, c.1490-1510 TL: 105.5cm BL: 79cm BT: 0.86cm Span of quillons 21cm. (in Musee Moyenage, Cluny, France)
How do museums get swords for their collections in this day and age? They auction for them! Or they buy them directly from people. How do I know? "Mode of acquisition: Purchase 2025 over-the-counter" musee-moyenage.fr/lieux-et-c…

The blade has multiple fullers and is robust, with a reinforced tip (it also means that the blade was short from the start).

I am happy this sword is now on display in a good museum.

The blade is not long... not all longswords have long blades. In fact, some longswords are quite short. What is not short if the grip, which characterises the type via use, not the blade on its own.

A few nice images I found of the arms and armour displayed in Museo Stibbert, Florence, Italy. Enjoy, and have a look at past posts. 👍
