When I published these two 12 & 10 years ago, it did seem the penny had finally dropped as to how economics depended on healthy Nature, & that the days of ‘get rid of the green crap’ & ‘the anti-growth coalition’ were behind us. Looks like new editions might be needed…

In 2012, when I was the US ambassador to Russia, Putin shut down USAID inside Russia. Why? Because their work supported free markets, democracy, human rights —ie causes that threatened Putins dictatorship. Shutting down USAID is exactly what autocrats all over the world want.

I drew this last November 26th knowing full well no self-respecting family newspaper in the country would be likely to print it. I was right. But given the events of this weekend, I’m gonna to let ‘er rip anyway. #USA #Canada #tariffs @realDonaldTrump

In its simplest terms, the apparent demise of #USAID is the result of the world's richest man ending a program that helps millions of poor people. You don't need a Ph.D. in moral theology to see why this is an evil. You can just read Jesus's parables on the rich and the poor.

Interesting thought... And it would certainly apply to Trump's specific attack on South African land reform policies too...

Most people would probably say the UK is more violent today. Not so. The Crime Survey for England & Wales says there were 1.1 million violent incidents in 2023-4. In 2011 there were 2 million, and around 4.5 m in 1995.

Does Richard think the world isn't warming? It is warming but it's nothing to do with CO2? Or it is to do with CO2 but who cares if he wins votes by opposing doing anything about it? Hard to know whether such people are stupid or just callously indifferent to our kids' future
Great news Trump pulling out of Paris Climate Agreement We should do the same. It is a lawyers charter to make money which damages ordinary folks ability to live their lives affordably It means higher bills & higher cost of living Only @reformparty_uk will make British people better off

I think Elon is unhappy that Wikipedia is not for sale. I hope his campaign to defund us results in lots of donations from people who care about the truth. If Elon wanted to help, he'd be encouraging kind and thoughtful intellectual people he agrees with to engage. donate.wikimedia.org/

Anyone care to open a book on when @elonmusk will announce his 2028 bid to be the 48th President of the United States? Mid-'26, I reckon...

Just a reminder that in Trump's first presidency, the installed capacity of solar power in the US doubled. Huff and puff he may, but the market trumped Trump, and it will do so again.

Interesting new survey of top corporate execs from Capgemini shows large majority planning to increase spending on sustainability. So much of the 'ESG backlash' is (at this stage at least) hype over reality. businessgreen.com/news-analy…

A day when you step back and wonder how the world ended up in a situation where its most powerful economy responds to ever worsening climate impacts by rejecting science, quitting international efforts to decarbonise, and drilling for more fossil fuels. businessgreen.com/news/43973…

Absolutely. And good to see the diary date didn't clash with anything else today...
Through struggle and discipline, persistence and faith, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. helped move this country forward. As we honor his legacy today, let’s remember the lesson he taught us: that even in the face of impossible odds, people who love this country can help change it. In honor of #MLKDay, I hope you’ll do what you can in your community to create a better future for us all.
