VOCAL Africa strongly condemns the arbitrary arrest of Chief Justice Emeritus David Maraga and environmental defenders today along Lang'ata Road.
They were peacefully protesting the state's egregious plan to excise 76 acres of protected land from Nairobi National Park to build a parking lot for the Bomas of Kenya.
When the very custodians of the law are bundled into police lorries for defending our fragile ecosystems, the state is sending a chilling message, corporate greed and concrete override constitutional freedoms. Article 37 guarantees the right to peaceful protest and Article 42 guarantees every Kenyan a clean, healthy environment.
We demand the immediate, unconditional release of CJ Emeritus Maraga and all environmental activists. The state must respect the law, protect our wildlife heritageand drop this destructive park excision plan immediately!
