I'm not religious, but this is how religious people should strive to be. They should strive for knowledge about the world and the people suffering within it, and ways that they as individuals can help, either objectively or in the context of their religious beliefs.

Jesus spoke of people, individuals looking out for one another and for each other.
Communism, socialism or any Juggernaut of a government entity, was never Christ's answer to anyone's problems.
What I recommend you do is travel outside of wherever you live and see other cultures. Go to developing countries. See how the people and the communities in Christian based counties treat their needy verses non Christian developing Countries.
To truly understand, bring a Bible with you and Begin by reading the Gospels.
You will begin to understand what Jesus Christ was actually about.

As to Christian conservatism, it's simply based on Biblical teachings, not modern political ideologies.
A Christian submits to Christian. As such they follow his moral laws. These moral laws clash with progressivism's ideologies.
And you know what?
Generation after generation, living in alignment with God's universal unchanging truth's, and following his teachings have proven to be the best way for people to live their lives in a way which helps them and society flourish.
so, go travel the world, observe people, and read the Good News.
