Forgot about this the first time I read. Does this mean @MattPolProf thinks that the music of Drake explores the complexity and crisis of our neoliberal era in the perfect manner? Should one assume that Matt is team Drake in the Kendrick beef being a patriotic Canadian?

Mark Carney's electoral dominance is not a permanent state. The only question is how much longer Canada's post-2025 political dynamic can realistically sustain itself. My latest on Substack — link in next tweet.

I went through a lot of these programs up to high school where I had to choose between gifted and arts school and chose the latter. Honestly best decision of my life since it meant encountering more well adjusted people who weren't already being brought up as hyper-competitors...
Gifted and Talented, or G&T, programs have long been a perennial subject of debate, particularly in New York City, where it has bedeviled mayors for years. Some parents have already washed their hands of the whole G&T business, refusing to participate in what they view as a corrupt system of segregation. But countless others still place significant stock in the G&T designation and what it offers and are comfortable relying on cognitive testing, should it be required, to determine whether a child qualifies. “When your intelligence is the foundation of your self-perception, failing to achieve feels like soul death,” writes Katie Arnold-Ratliff. But if the limited amount of information we have about gifted kids long-term is any indication, most lead, at best, ordinary lives of modest accomplishment. A 35-year study of 677 gifted children found that by age 50, only 12.3 percent had reached a level of “eminence,” defined as “full professors … Fortune 500 executives … judges and lawyers, leaders in biomedicine, award-winning journalists and writers.” This means 88 percent never did. Arnold-Ratliff digs into the myth of the gifted child, and how our notions of intelligence may be inherently flawed: nymag.visitlink.me/9mc2Wh
Community note
The study defines eminence as accomplishing "something rare" like becoming full professors at research universities or Fortune 500 executives; 12.3% of gifted participants achieved it, far exceeding general population rates. pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC64…

...and where the teachers focused more on developing your individual sensibility and less on getting you to hit benchmarks. All thats to say I think these programs have merit (I got something from the time I got to work on writing for example) but there's more important...

...outcomes to look for than "these people wound up in high profile careers." How fulfilled they feel, what their family and community are like... the things you realize are actually important as you get older and what we ought to teach kids to value.

Really? When did eliminating the right to own property for the ruling classes and guardians, communal family life, and a rejection of tradition as doxa in favor of utopian idealism become right wing?...
Reading Plato’s Republic with a basic level of reading comprehension will turn any person into a right wing extremist by modern British standards. I wonder if they’ll ban Socrates in the UK too. Wouldn’t that be poetic!

...Dont get me wrong Plato isnt a proto-leftist. He was also deeply anti-egalitarian, hostile to democracy, paternalistic etc. My point is its ridiculous to try and lump him into contemporary political framing in such a transparently partisan way.

Even the point about Socrates is hilarious since its an American conservative who remains the only person I know to expressly argue "yeah the Athenians were right to kill him. All that relentlessly critical questioning undermines authority..."

When we ask AI to write for us, we diminish our capacity to think for ourselves and connect with one another. We're set to leave ourselves stupid, disconnected, and hopelessly dominated by companies and governments. No thanks. davidmoscrop.com/p/what-ai-c…

✊🏻 NO JETS T.O.! Federal New Democrats stand with the @OntarioNDP and the people of Toronto against Doug Ford’s destructive Billy Bishop scheme. The Prime Minister has the power to shut this down once and for all. Protect Toronto’s waterfront, reject Ford’s Wall Street giveaway!
Doug Ford is pushing an expansion of Billy Bishop airport against Torontonians wishes while Liberal MPs remain silent. Instead of answering why, the Minister mocked me for asking! (I am the NDP critic for Transport & the Minister knows this). @NoJetsTO @OntarioNDP

I’m a free speech absolutist except when it comes to Yankees not understanding Canada.
Canada seems like it tried to imitate American wokeness (as it imitates American everything), but wokeness didn't really fit Canadian society as well (because it has no large permanent-underclass minority), so it mutated into something very toxic and bizarre.
