These lessons extend beyond public housing. Across the US, low-income neighborhoods that are more socially connected to nearby affluent areas see better outcomes for kids. We don’t see the reverse for high-income areas—so integration can help low-income kids without much harm.

We mapped low-income neighborhoods across the US that could benefit from connection-based revitalization. While solutions must fit local context, HOPE VI shows that connecting isolated neighborhoods to the broader community can meaningfully improve economic opportunity.
