An eighteenth-century mystery – longish thread. While I was feverish with covid, I bought a random book. (1/16)

This was a lot of fun! Also the trip to the desert island at the end. Apologies in advance to the seagulls.
NEW EPISODE: A forgotten letter addressed to “Good Mrs Shakspaire” may rewrite what we thought we knew about Anne Hathaway—and where she lived. This week on That Shakespeare Life, @MatthewSteggle shares how this tiny archival discovery might place Anne in London, right alongside her famous husband. 🎧 Listen now → cassidycash.com/ep380

Impressive work from @France24_en and @GavinLeeNews on the Shakspaire letter.
‘Good Mrs Shakespeare’ ✍️🎭 #Shakespeare scholar @MatthewSteggle has deciphered a letter fragment sent to #AnneHathaway that appears to tell us he might not have left his wife behind in Stratford 🤯 & that they lived for a while on Trinity Lane London.. youtu.be/imXFvpoD5Ns?si=_hh7…

Heading home from #marlowe24. Only regret is not getting to say hello properly to tweeps inc @RachelJWillie, @earlymodatLancs , and @eoin_price. Footsore, underslept, and enthused. Congratulations to the organisers.

Morbid and bizarre q: anyone know of any renaissance images which show an explosion, ideally one with body parts flying off in all directions? It’s for @MarloweMightyLn at Deptford, unsurprisingly…

This is really good - an evocative story told through clever, dogged detective work, feeding a subtle, even-handed discussion of the narratives around archival discovery. Fabulous stuff from @ZacharyLesser and @whitneytrettien.

Could a text thought to be by #Shakespeare’s father actually be his sister’s writing? 🔓 @MatthewSteggle’s recent History Matters is free to read for the next 7 days buff.ly/4cieSm4

I love this joke, like a short circuit between Mustian’s small neighbourhood world and the pro theatre she is (we argue) consciously emulating. And surely she has at least heard of Hamlet, a big success now 10 years old. V much @eoin_price territory.
The play's the thing, wherein I'll catch the conscience of that bastard next door! Great work, team!

Very much looking forward to this. My paper features Marlowe, flying fish, dragons, and a jumbo jet.
