the longstanding cultural tension between cybernetics and perceptron/NN pioneers is one of the most important as is that between pure mathematicians and engineering physicists [this tension affects people's confidences in what they consider admissible evidence and what is noise, their attitudes towards Knightian uncertainty/OOD generalization, their attitude towards "reward", and ultimately their attitudes towards alignment/AI risk] Maybe surprisingly less on philpapers.org positions [that just means philpapers needs to make better questions]

ENS-Paris is where mathematics and engineering physics have low impedance! That's where @gabrielpeyre came from!

Isn't it so funny how the "more is different" paper came from the founder of anderson localization? maybe there is deeper meaning in this!

signal groupchats (and whatsapp ones, too) are making me sadder so I am progressively withdrawing from them. email remains the best way to reach me.

some people use psychedelics just enough to finally settle in a different attractor basin and then never use them again bc they don't want to destabilize themselves out of the new "better" attractor basin

on may 31, all harvard students who graduated last year lose their college.harvard.edu emails, unless they back their emails up (...and you know the technical skills of some harvard students....)

Mb my true intrinsic interest was quantifying the manifold of shock/surprise/suspense/awe/treacherous turns all along!! claude.ai/share/e2354bb0-96b… [mb adaptive sampling across policies more than value functions locally helps]

I have no one I can channel excitement into anymore (my friend called it "manic energy" but they acknowledged they caused what happened), and this is why I've been so lethargic. I had the ability to channel an unreal-feeling-like-level of excitement into MULTIPLE people in 2021 and that's what made my presence to many in 2021 magical to **a lot of ppl**. It almost seemed unreal. That doesn't mean it has entirely gone away.

made a thread about mindfulness, contrast, and sensemaking claude.ai/share/dc68a117-fa9… you are what your mind attends to, and there are ways to impose better control over it, esp once you no longer rely on others forcing you to do things you don't want to do
