A friend in Amsterdam has a new "sidewalk garden" in front of her house.
She requested it online on the city hall website.
Two guys came in four days, removed some tiles, added a curbstone, and added some soil. It was all done in 20-30 minutes.
And all that for free. They also brought a bunch of plants that my friend had to pay for herself. She also had to plant them. The total price of those was 7.5€ 🤯
There are some rules:
- The garden can be a max. of 45 cm wide
- There needs to be a min. of 2 meters of the sidewalk left
- You need to take care of it
This inexpensive and straightforward initiative made Amsterdam one of the most enjoyable cities to walk in.
You see these "gardens" everywhere, and I always thought it was just locals who were building them in the DIY style.
