Excl w/ @MaxKendix & @breeallegretti: Wes Streeting is likely to abandon his bid for the Labour leadership and fall in behind Andy Burnham if the Greater Manchester mayor wins the Makerfield by-election, senior allies believe. Figures organising for the former health secretary told The Times that there was an emerging feeling that “no one can beat Andy” if Burnham makes it back to parliament and launches a putsch against Sir Keir Starmer. A source close to Streeting dismissed the suggestions as “rubbish” and said that he could not have been clearer that he would stand in any race. But another suggested there had been open discussions about whether Streeting would eventually fall in behind Burnham. They said: “The consensus among the team is that if Andy wins Makerfield, it turns to bargaining for the best possible secretary of state position. If he loses, that’s a different matter.” Another added: “There is a world where Wes has looked at the polling and doesn’t go over the top.” A third senior ally of Streeting in parliament said: “I don’t think it’s clear cut. If Andy wins the by-election it’s obviously a real success. But where he stands on a whole range of issues is unknown and there’s clearly a case for having a good open process where we figure out.” A spokesperson for Streeting said: “Wes couldn’t have been clearer: he wants Andy to win Makerfield, wants him in the battle of ideas we need in Labour, and Wes will be a candidate the coming contest.” thetimes.com/article/110e75c…
