Reliving the foundation of US Air Force R&D/Acquisition at McCook Field in/after World War I. Tweeting events on the dates they occurred 100 years ago, 1917
I’m Maj Lawrence W McIntosh, new (Dec 1922) commander of McCook Field
1908 @WestPoint_USMA grad (9th in class!), cavalry vet, pilot, former cmdr of Selfridge, Ellington, & Wilbur Wright Fields. Deputy here since 1919. I’ll pick up where Maj Bane left off

March 2, 1923: Secretary of War John Weeks (third left) and the department's top staff officers, including Army Chief of Staff Gen. John Pershing (second left).
1/25/1923 I was remiss in not acknowledging the resignation of Maj George Hallett from McCook Field, head of our Power Plant Section, last month. A thread 1/9 @AFResearchLab@AFLCMCHO@AFLCMCofficial@DrMikeGregg @mikeheil
8/9 he also was instrumental in improving air cooled cylinders, mainly for radial engines. Imported Sam Heron from England, developed sodium-cooled valves. (Pic via @SDASM )
9/9 Hallett (R, with Bane) left Air Service Dec 1922 to avoid Army req to deploy overseas every 4 years. Is going to work for Charles Kettering & General Motors Research Inst here in Dayton. Great loss. Replaced by ET Jones (2nd pic) as Power Plant chief. @DrMikeGregg @mikeheil
The U.S. Army withdraws its last occupational forces from Germany, departing from Coblenz and ending the stationing of troops there after more than four years. At noon, the American flag is lowered and the remaining American troops board trains at the Coblenz station.
#OTD 1922. My last day as an army officer, head of the Air Service Engineering Div, & commander of McCook Field. Tonight, we celebrate, tomorrow my replacement will introduce himself.
12/8/1922: one week until my retirement. We have a few big events planned (let’s just say my civilian career is all set to “take off!”) so stay tuned! @AFResearchLab@AFLCMCHO
11/14/1922: I regret to announce that I will be retiring from the Army Air Service next month & have already been excused from duty for health reasons. It has been my privilege to lead the Engineering Division here for the past 4 years.
