I heard a number of stories like this while on the faculty job market, often told in good humor. But it's not really funny, is it? You shouldn't have to feel like you have to drink or go back to someone's house/hotel to land the job or network. I am so tired of this culture
Sometimes I think about how in grad school a professor (who I liked and handled this with grace) did a professionalization session on conferences and was like "just be congenial! One time I met an academic I admired and we went back to his hotel room for beers. Networking!" (1/2)
