EXTREMELY URGENT APPEAL FOR HELP: Yunus, a 5-year-old boy in Lucknow, has been diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD), an extremely rare disorder that causes progressive muscle weakness, destroying a child’s ability to walk by the time he is 12. Most of those affected by DMD don’t live beyond their 30s. It affects an estimated one in 3,300 boys. Yunus is unfortunately one of the 3,300 boys. Last year, the US FDA approved a gene therapy that can help treat this disorder. The one-time treatment delivers a working copy of a gene to make up for one that leads to the disease. This one-time treatment costs an estimated 3 million US Dollars, or 26 crore Indian Rupees, a near-impossible amount for the middle-class family of Yunus to afford. The therapy has been approved for children aged 4 and 5. Yunus will turn 6 in September, and his parents are desperate to get this treatment for their only son before time runs out.
