It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of our founder and former CEO, Dr. Greg Powell on April 30, 2025. A visionary, a leader, and a life-saver, the seed of Dr. Powell’s legacy began with a day’s visit to a MASH Unit in Saigon during the Vietnam War and grew into what STARS is today—a lifeline for patients in need of critical care, no matter where they are. Driven by compassion and an unwavering commitment to patient care, Dr. Powell helped change the way emergency medical care is delivered in Canada. His vision became a reality that continues to save lives every day. We extend our deepest sympathies to Dr. Powell’s family and loved ones. His loss is deeply felt across our STARS family, the many communities we serve and the numerous organizations with which Greg was involved. Greg was an inspirational voice and leader across many organizations – a lasting impact of his life’s work.

As an emergency physician, I can confidently say that the PTSD and horrors witnessed by paramedics and first responders is dramatically more difficult to process than what we see in the ED. The highest respect to my first responder colleagues.
