#OTD (14th June) 1170 Henry II has his son and heir Henry crowned in recognition of his status as king in waiting. However, the younger Henry, known as The Young King, seems to think this entitles him to equal status to his father and spends much of the rest of his short life agitating against Henry II who couldn't see things more differently. Henry II is the boss and he fully intended to show that to his heir and his brattish brothers.

This is a point i make every now and then on my social media pages for the benefit of new followers. If you're wondering what sort of history you get on this page, it is centred purely around the people who made medieval history what it is. I could cover other areas in more detail like warfare, weapons and armour, laws, buildings etc. But who people are is what has always triggered my interest and i rarely stray from that.

Not one for dog lovers. Orderic Vitalis describing a nasty practise of Henry I; "A man of tremendous energy, he greatly increased his worldly possessions, and collected a huge treasure-store of precious objects. He claimed for himself alone the hunting rights all over England, and even had the feet of dogs living in the neighbourhood of forests mutilated, only grudgingly allowing a few of his greatest nobles and closest friends the privilege of hunting in their own woods."

In this image, two Richard II's can be seen which is, frankly, a frightening thought

#OTD 13th June 1381 The Savoy Palace is burned down by the rebels of the Peasants Revolt. The palace belonged to John of Gaunt whom the rebels despised but as they couldn't get their hands on him, they put the Savoy, a symbol of his wealth and power, to the flames.
