2026 season recap I hate this game

Now that NAIC is behind us -- I decided to figure out our cost for the season. We hit every IC and every NA regional with 3 people. The 3 of us had vastly different goals and every goal was achieved. My goal was Ace Trainer -- which I pulled off by getting 199 CP at locals and 20 CP from Houston regional after some DQ's put in me in T1024. Liam's goal was to day 2 an event as a Senior. That happened on the first event, so we made the new goal Worlds. This was achieved with 1000CP. This was Liam's first year as a senior. Cohen's goal was 3 top cuts with 1 being an IC. He was able to accomplish this and more. This is his last year as a senior and he finished in the Top 16 with 1520CP. We still have worlds and I included the cost in our numbers. I did not include locals, entry fees, food, tequila or any other cost. I figure we would be doing those things either way. Also a lot of our flights were not economy, but I included actual cost anyway. Some events we had 2 hotel rooms instead of 1. Cohen is going to win worlds.

LOS SUEÑOS NO TIENEN FECHA DE CADUCIDAD Durante mucho tiempo pensé que para ganar un gran torneo de Pokémon TCG necesitabas una cosa por encima de todas las demás: tiempo. - Tiempo para probar mazos. - Tiempo para viajar. - Tiempo para estudiar el metajuego. - Tiempo para analizar errores y mejorar. - Tiempo para hablar con otros jugadores y contrastar ideas. Y cuando la vida empezó a llenar de responsabilidades, llegué a pensar que competir al máximo nivel dejaba de ser una opción. Llega el trabajo, las obligaciones y para algunos de nosotros, los hijos. Entonces empiezas a mirar a tu alrededor y ves jugadores que pasan tardes enteras testeando, que juegan decenas de partidas al día y que parecen vivir conectados al juego las 24h, mientras tú apenas encuentras una hora libre por la noche. En este punto es fácil pensar: ¨Ya no puedo competir al máximo nivel¨. ¨No tengo tiempo suficiente¨. ¨Los demás están muy por encima¨. Yo también lo he pensado... Pero después de ganar un Regional, he llegado a una conclusión diferente: no siempre gana quien más tiempo tiene. Muchas veces gana quien mejor aprovecha el tiempo que tiene. Y creo que este mensaje puede ayudar a muchos jugadores que, como yo, intentan compaginar Pokémon con una vida llena de responsabilidades. LO QUE TE ENSEÑA SER PADRE Curiosamente, ser padre me ha convertido en mejor competidor, porque me ha obligado a desarrollar habilidades que también son importantes en Pokémon: - Gestión del tiempo. - Paciencia. - Control emocional. - Capacidad para adaptarme cuándo las cosas no salen según lo previsto. - Mantener la calma cuando todo va mal. Cuando tienes hijos entiendes que no todo sale como estaba planeado. Y en un torneo ocurre exactamente lo mismo: hay malas manos, hay emparejamientos difíciles , hay errores, hay momentos donde nada parece funcionar... PREPARACIÓN INTELIGENTE Cuando tienes poco tiempo no puedes permitirte desperdiciarlo. Por eso empecé a cambiar mi forma de preparar los torneos: empiezas a jugar para mejorar, cada sesión tiene un propósito, cada partida tiene una pregunta que responder, cada error tiene una lección detrás. En lugar de jugar partidas sin rumbo: - Analizo los enfrentamientos más importantes. - Estudio listas. - Hablo con otros jugadores. - Pienso en los planes de partida. Descubrí que muchas veces una conversación de treinta minutos con jugadores de confianza aporta más que una noche entera jugando sin rumbo. Porque la preparación inteligente siempre supera a la preparación improvisada. EL APOYO QUE NADIE VE Cuando un jugador gana un Regional, la gente ve el trofeo, la foto, la celebración, los aplausos. Lo que no ve es todo lo que hay detrás. Las personas que te apoyan cuando pruebas mazos, la familia que entiende tus viajes, tu mujer cuando llegas tarde porque estabas testeando, los hijos que te preguntan si has ganado. Ningún éxito es completamente individual. Y cuanto más compites, más valoras a quiénes te acompañan en el camino. UN MENSAJE PARA LOS PADRES QUE JUEGAN POKÉMON Si eres padre y a veces sientes que llegas tarde al juego, si trabajas toda la semana y apenas puedes testear, si has pensado en dejar de competir porque crees que ya no puedes estar al nivel de los mejores, quiero decirte algo: ¨No subestimes tu experiencia¨. ¨No subestimes tu disciplina¨. ¨No subestimes todo lo que has aprendido fuera de Pokémon¨. Las habilidades que desarrollas en tu vida diaria también se reflejan en la mesa de juego. Ganar sigue siendo posible, ganar un torneo importante no ocurre todos los días y tampoco debería ser el único objetivo. Lo importante es seguir disfrutando del juego, seguir aprendiendo, seguir compartiendo experiencias con amigos, seguir emocionándote cuando robas la carta exacta que necesitas. Si alguna vez piensas que tu momento ya pasó porque tienes trabajo, familia o menos tiempo para jugar, recuerda esto: Los sueños no tienen fecha de caducidad. Puedes ser padre, puedes trabajar, puedes tener responsabilidades... y aun así sentarte frente a algunos de los mejores jugadores del mundo y competir de tú a tú. Porque al final, en Pokémon TCG, no siempre gana quien tiene más tiempo. Muchas veces gana quien ha aprendido a valorar cada minuto.

Seeing Annabelle make it to the finals two years in a row is something I never dreamed would become reality. I was hopeful, of course; just like every Pokémon trainer and every parent. Losing in the finals is something we can accept, especially against an exceptional player like Luke. Our kids have experienced their share of losses, and that’s part of competition. What I never expected and what truly broke my heart was hearing people boo her simply for playing the game. Annabelle didn’t hear/see the negative part of the crowd during her match today, and for that I’m grateful. But hearing it myself has left me questioning whether competitive Pokémon is a healthy environment for her. What hurts most is that many of the people rooting against her today are people we’ve celebrated alongside. We’ve sung happy birthday to their children, given gifts, congratulated them after great performances, and cheered them on through Regional top cuts and World Championship runs. I completely understand supporting your favorite player. What I struggle to understand is making another child feel unwelcome and ashamed simply for competing. My daughter has one of the kindest hearts I know. No one could honestly say she has ever intentionally hurt anyone. She approaches this game with sportsmanship, always doing her best while treating others with kindness. She started playing Pokémon because Jeff showed her how incredible both the game and the community could be. Annabelle is full of joy, compassion, and a carefree spirit, and I’ve always wanted to protect those qualities for as long as possible. Today was an extraordinary accomplishment and I could not be prouder. She stood on one of the biggest stages in Pokémon, competed with grace, and represented herself exactly as she always has with heart, respect, and courage. Mommy is so proud. I love you, Annabelle.
