To colleagues reflecting on challenging times, just think of the little 8yr old girl in Carlisle city centre who spent her Saturday walking along police lines @Cumbriapolice giving out her chocolates and thanking police officers for keeping her safe. Keep the faith.

Join us, 9pm TONIGHT to discuss #ResponsePolicing with @CumbriaChief #WeCops
24 Jun 2024
This weeks @WeCops is with @CumbriaChief on Response Policing - join us 9pm on Wednesday 👍 Welcome to National Response Policing Week. I am Chief Constable Rob Carden, NPCC Lead for Response Policing. I am pleased to introduce this year’s #WeCops event, dedicated to Response Policing. The event will be held on Wednesday 26th June. #WeCops is an excellent opportunity to understand the challenges and opportunities facing Response Officers across the country. In spite of rule changes regarding the use of X, such was the popularity of last year’s event that we still managed to trend at 6th nationally. Although we finished ahead of Spurs and the Repair Workshop, we weren’t able to catch Arsenal or Madonna; something to aim for this year. The responses we received on the three questions we set last year have been invaluable. Your feedback has helped us to move forward on a range of issues including welfare and wellbeing, the digital academy, reward and recognition and work supporting the development of a national standard for attendance times.

I am keen to develop and strengthen ways in which the national portfolio can support response officers. To this end. I invite you to join me in this week’s #WeCops event on Wednesday….

New Year and it would appear time to explain how Response Policing works again. 👀 Everyday when I come in we as a Sergeants Team work out the postings for the day. 🚔 What are postings? 🤷🏼‍♂️ So in The Metropolis we are lucky on response we can post *most* officers together in a vehicle. ✅ We do this because it’s the quickest way for them to get to calls and also to keep each other as safe as possible. 🚨 So for example this morning we paraded: 3 x Response Vans (1 Single Crewed) 6 x Response Cars 3 x Non Response Cars 1 x Appointment Car - Single Crewed. Their responsibility is to get to as many emergencies - immediate response calls as possible and also answer as many substantial or extended calls too. 🚔 An immediate response call has a 15 minute response time. 💨 Substantial - an hour response. 🚨 Extended - twenty four hour response. ⚠️ My job as the Section Sergeant - Section essentially means borough - is to make sure we are attending the right calls at the right time, based primarily on risk. 👀 As you can imagine it’s a pretty hectic job. 🫠 I enjoy it and it’s good fun, but London is a *very* busy place. 😅 By midday today: 2 x Vans off the road with detainees. 4 x Response Cars off the road with detainees or urgent paperwork. 1 x Non Response Car off the road at a sudden death. We hand over at 1400 to Late Turn so that left a single crewed van and one response car to cover any further Immediate Response calls. 🚔 Now the team worked their socks off today, got to as many outstanding and new calls as they could, but the reality is we cannot hit everything and unlikely ever will. 🤷🏼‍♂️ I also have to make decisions as I mentioned earlier about risk. 🚨 I might not like those decisions, but it’s the only way to manage call volume safely. ✅ So for example if someone has been assaulted and the suspect has left and there are no or only minor injuries and at the same time a domestic assault call comes in, I have to prioritise the domestic assault because at that time it carries more risk. 🚔 Sometimes the risks are higher. Sometimes I have to choose between deploying officers to a robbery in progress or someone threatening to take their own life. 👀 It’s not an easy job to do and it’s not easy for the response cops who want to get to and help everyone. 🫤 We truly try to do our best every shift to get to everything we can and when I left today 70% of the team were still sat writing away from the jobs they had been to. ✍️ There’s now almost 10 million people in London, more ways than ever before to report crime, and each day teams of Response Cops do their best to detect, deter and solve crime. 📱 I couldn’t be more proud of my old team and my new team, what they deal with, how they deal with it and their work ethic. 👏 So yes, we’d rather be there sooner, but it’s simply not always possible. #ThinBlueLine 🚨
