Yes, probably have that old gear somewhere still. 2.4Ghz and OpenMesh firmware. It got a bit weathered corroded and got obsoleted by mobile data. But still plenty of need for #nearlynet - especially for disaster resilience- eg power or fibre goes down.
Hey @MeshnetNZ - remember that #nearlynet cache to assist not having a WiFi iPod (Mesh|Pod). - 15 years ago. Got solar panel to supplement batteries đŸȘ« & it could run most the day, but usually fell over at night (or on a windy day when its tree based mount would move too much)

Really pimping those agentic skills. Only 358 connectors left, but most of them are $BIGTECH #enshittification so I got @MeshnetNZ to host some endpoints for #tinyNature to scrobble from and connect all the things and it's fun to have my ears connected to an #agentic AI via @NaturaAI #HumanPods (even if #NZNOG doesn't want my new SOC2 / OAuth'd connectivity methods)
tinyNature is now connected to my Twitter. Let's see what trouble we can get into. đŸ€–

Yes, we submitted on it - heck we already have lawful interception via #TICSA on at least three layers above our services - why do they need a 4th layer and power over overseas providers - it’s the service we deploy on top of that infrastructure that is critical to #NZ security

We remember the internet back in the day - there were no “safeguards” to knowledge and we all turned out fine, right? #DeepSeekR1 appears to have no safeguards

Mesh|net used to provide an open, unfiltered WiFi in Central Station. Was part of @JoMangee’s contracted terms to have an “unmanaged device” but it was air gapped and we provided encrypted USBs that needed enterprise auth and logging. @centralcomms đŸ‘‹đŸŒ rnz.co.nz/news/national/5661

Multihoming with diverse paths helps - failed back to bonded 5G from two providers and carried on.

Bit of a phish doing the rounds - check your #domain renewal dates and don’t give them your credit card details. @CrazyDomains have it all saved ready for Auto Renew and won’t #phish you like this

Yes, running two modems non stop was all the internet you needed for a neighbourhood. Worked until #realtime auction sites like TradeMe needed internet now, rather than podcasts and archives and software content from a cache.

so you could still answer the phone and have a 20-30s call before the modem lost its carrier and disconnected. #nearlynet - we could pull about 15-17GB a month for <$5 over a local phone call to Clearnet or Zfree #ISPs - was the start of @MeshnetNZ - download content for others

Even anonymized “vehicle-to-everything” (V2X) data can be filtered or hacked, potentially providing a gold mine for advertisers, police or criminals. “Once that data is out there, people will find ways to use it,” EFF’s Cliff Braun told Marketplace. marketplace.org/2024/08/20/d

It's been twenty years and there are still no clear boundaries on behavior like this. No one charged with looking out for users' interests save public interest-minded folks to discover some of what even mainstream apps are doing. (TikTok has over a billion monthly active users!)

Any web page that specifies a target frame on a href link effectively owns that resulting tab and can do all sorts. Check out #BeEF - The Browser Exploitation Framework - and look back at 20 years of #webdev - some devs haven’t forgotten that noscript foo either.
"TikTok, when opening any website in their app, injects tracking code that can monitor all keystrokes, including passwords, and all taps." Paging @FTC h/t @macargnelutti

We’ve outgrown ‘joy’ so moving over to a new more joyful server. You should have an email with the new host details - but do yell out if anything isn’t working following the migration from 08:30 on 6th June. Hardcoded DNS and other server based or IP based things may break 😅

A couple of users had custom scripts with hard coded paths — You’ll note ~/home is now on /root/home2/ on the server. Building some flexibility into the system.
