#DisclosureDay - One of the Absolute Masters of Cinema, who has touched almost every genre and every person on earth with a career that spans across 6 decades and 36 feature films, is finally back to one of his main obsessions, one of his main themes, so, of course, the expectations for this, were huge.
Theres a lot I really love about this new Spielberg entry and a lot that makes me consider it one of the best films of the year: seeing a filmmaker at the top of his game, shooting action sequences like a God, giving us quite a ride and teaching us a lesson about believing in humanity and not being afraid of the things we don´t know... Thats not something we see every day. And in the middle of that, a sort-of love story about two strangers that have been touched by something no one understand, and know a language no one understands, that was quite something as well... (something that hit me for personal reasons).
There were theories about how all Spielberg movies related to UFO phenomenons previous to this one (of course, I´m talking about
#CloseEncountersOfTheThirdKind,
#ET and the great
#WarOfTheWorlds) were movies about divorce or couple separation, meaning, he somehow connected those two themes, but he breaks that mold completely here.
I love how this could feel kind of a spiritual sequel (or even a real sequel) to
#CloseEncountersOfTheThirdKind, but I believe having that film so fresh (just rewatched it two weeks ago, at the Cineteca in Chapultepec) helped but also harmed this viewing: on one side of things, I could appreciate this true homage / kind-of-sequel to that sacred movie (I really love how parallel it is: in
#CloseEncountersOfTheThirdKind I remember thinking: if aliens would really come to this world, this is how it would be... and now, in
#DisclosureDay, I feel the exact same way!!! Now, THIS IS how a contact with aliens would turn out in the real world of today, with mobile phones, social media, etc), yet, on the other side, having that film so fresh made this feel slightly less original, like a re-run of a better and brighter classic.
The story is definitely not original (not just because of
#CloseEncountersOfTheThirdKind.. I mean, we´ve seen this tropes in every X-FILE episode and even in
#MenInBlack ) and it didn´t surprise me or touch me like other Spielberg entries (thats why I´m not ranking it with 5-stars, and it aint so high in my Spielberg rank, more like mid-tier), but always a pleasure seeing the Master back to his themes, his obsessions, and knocking it out of the park.
Made me think of how a director make ONE movie and keeps making it through out his career, and I know which one is mine.
