IMEO collects and integrates #MethaneEmissions data to target ambitious emissions reductions & track progress on mitigation commitments. Powered by @UNEP.
🟢 250 years after Alessandro Volta first identified methane from bubbling marshes, science is transforming how we understand — and act on — this powerful greenhouse gas. 🧵
📍 Strengthening effort to #CutMethane in Iraq: This week, UNEP’s IMEO is convening an online workshop with government representatives, national oil companies and technical experts to build capacity for methane action.

What does methane action look like in practice? ➡️ Find out how better data is turning an invisible gas into one of our fastest opportunities to tackle climate change.
Progress includes membership in @UNEP's OGMP 2.0 and use of satellite data from IMEO's Methane Alert and Response System.
From detecting emissions to taking action on the ground, the video highlights how turning data into action can help keep valuable gas in the pipeline instead
🔉 The Earth is sending us signals too hot to ignore, but momentum is growing for #ClimateActionNow. That includes progress to find and fix methane leaks in countries like Azerbaijan.

🛰️ Meanwhile satellite data provided via IMEO's Methane Alert and Response System (MARS) is empowering the government and operators to tackle super-emitters. In Azerbaijan, MARS has detected around 100 methane plumes linked to more than 30 oil and gas sources.
🌍 As countries across Central Asia increase efforts to address methane emissions, progress in Azerbaijan highlights the importance of credible data, transparency and action on the ground to accelerate methane mitigation.

💬 “Methane was discovered by chance, but we must act by choice.”
In a new piece, @UNEP’s IMEO Officer in Charge Andreea Calcan reflects on nearly two decades working on #MethaneEmissions — and how a methane data revolution can transform #ClimateAction.
🧵
💨 From satellite-detected super-emitters to real-world mitigation, Calcan reflects on how advances in methane monitoring are making invisible emissions visible — and increasingly difficult to ignore.
🌍 As transparency increases — from satellite detections to country response rates and the world’s top 50 methane sources — the challenge is no longer whether methane emissions can be seen, but whether the world acts quickly enough to #CutMethane.

📅 Building capacity to #CutMethane in Uzbekistan. 3–4 June 2026 UNEP’s IMEO is hosting a Technical Training Workshop in Tashkent to ensure satellite methane data translates to action on the ground. 🧵
📊 Through technical sessions, case studies, and interactive exercises, participants will gain practical knowledge on methane emission sources, detection technologies, interpretation of satellite data, and response mechanisms.
🔎 As IMEO advances its global efforts on methane transparency, building national capacity on data and detection is key to accelerating #MethaneEmissions reductions.

Next week, researchers and technical experts from more than 30 institutions are gathering in Hong Kong for the 2026 International Workshop on Methane Observation and Quantification 🧵
🚀 This year’s workshop follows the successful launch of the Multi-Spectral Imaging Carbon Observatory (MUSICO) payload, which is now aboard China’s Tiangong space station.
IMEO is collaborating with HKUST to help advance space-based methane monitoring capabilities and strengthen global methane transparency.
