I was so sad today to learn that Eleanor Selfridge-Field died 2 months ago. Eleanor's and Walter Hewlett's work at the Center for Computer-Assisted Research in the Humanities was the foundation on which MusicXML was built, and Beyond MIDI was the handbook. everloved.com/life-of/eleano…
David Huron's work on Humdrum was the other main influence, and my B.S. thesis advisor Barry Vercoe was the one who sent me their way. Now we've lost all but Walter, but their influence lives on and on.
RIP Michael Tilson Thomas. I was lucky beyond words to sing for MTT during four seasons in the San Francisco Symphony Chorus, and to be in the audience during his 25 amazing years as music director.
To mark the expiration of my noncompete agreement, here's a new blog post summarizing the three years since my last blog post! michaelgood.info/2026/01/the…
RIP Tom Stoppard. Arcadia is one of my favorite plays ever. I made sure to see Leopoldstadt on Broadway. But there are so many plays of his I haven't seen yet.

Bravi to everyone in Chess on Broadway @chessbway! What outstanding performances of this magnificent score. I thought the book also solved the main problem of the show by making the three leads more likable, softening the two men a little and making Florence more active.
Another fine review for Samson et Dalila, this time including the chorus: "Bruce Olstad’s chorus handles the material adeptly, and it’s a real treat for those who enjoy choral music." Just two more performances this weekend in Palo Alto: don't miss out. almanacnews.com/ae/2025/10/1…
We're two weeks away from opening our @WestBayOpera production of Saint-Saëns' Samson et Dalila in Palo Alto. We have a fabulous cast, wonderful dancers, and a juicy chorus part. This great opera isn't done often - don't miss it! Tickets are available at wbopera.org/tickets-page-202…

RIP Jamshied Sharifi. He joined the MIT Festival Jazz Ensemble right after I left at graduation, and helped take the group to some of its greatest heights. I was so happy when he became FJE director when Herb Pomeroy retired. His gifts of music will keep giving us joy.

One of the people that Barry Vercoe pointed me to for MusicXML starting points was David Huron, who died just 10 days before Barry on June 5. Besides his work on Humdrum, listening to him was always inspirational. May his memory be a blessing. legacy.com/us/obituaries/leg…
RIP Barry Vercoe, one of the pioneers for computer music software. He was my B.S. thesis advisor at MIT on some early music notation software. 20 years later, he pointed me to the best starting points for my work on MusicXML. May his memory be a blessing. cdm.link/barry-vercoe/
One more rave review for our Otello at @WestBayOpera, this time from one of the most popular opera blogs. This production has closed, but season tickets will soon be on sale for the 70th season, featuring Samson et Dalila, Salome, and Tosca. parterre.com/2025/06/03/vene…
We've received another rave review for Otello at @WestBayOpera. Thanks to everyone who attended, including the virtually sold-out house for our final performance. splashmags.com/index.php/202…
