I was 11 years old when I learned my sisters’ names. I was born into the same family. I saw my sisters every day while growing up. I lived with them! We ate together, watched Unsolved Mysteries together, and fought over whose turn it was to use the bathroom mirror. I was 11 years old! I had a homework assignment- explain your family tree. So Mama wrote down their names. I remember pondering over the names, and it hit me in the gut how little I knew about the people in my life. Deaf children do not have access to incidental learning of spoken languages! Even if they have devices to amplify sounds, they still need auditory and speech training! ASL helps bridge knowledge and language skills! What I experienced is called “language deprivation.” It’s a serious crisis in education today, for thousands of deaf children. Only 1 out of 4 families with deaf children use sign language! Many schools still ban ASL. I was 11 years old when I learned my sisters’ names.

Be positive and grateful. Yesterday I took my kids to an ice cream store in a small country town and we met a man who was celebrating his 92nd birthday. As I chatted with him and wished him a happy birthday I noticed his positive attitude and zest for life. I asked him what his secret is to living a long and happy life and this is what he said to me and my kids: “Life has been good to me. I married the love of my life. I couldn’t have chosen better. We had many wonderful years together before she passed. I have a wonderful family and friends who care about me and I stay positive no matter what. That’s all there is to it. So it’s love.
