Congratulations to FAER Board member @drchadb of @UMichAnesthesia on being recognized for his outstanding mentorship! FAER is very grateful to benefit from Dr. Brummett’s scientific & mentoring expertise on the Board & in leading #FAERmsarf
Thank you @jess_spence13 for your comprehensive and thoughtful review (and trial) of benzodiazepine use in anesthesia at @UMichAnesthesia Grand Rounds conference. You are definitely making us think critically about our use of these medications we use daily.

Congratulations to our Sachin Kheterpal, MD/MBA, who received the @ASALifeline Excellence in Research Award today in recognition of the impact of his research on the field. #ANES24

HUGE thanks to Drs. Thalji, Hader, Colquhoun, and Neuman for kicking off the @FAERanesthesia@eSASAnesthesia discussing the alphabet soup of research funding to early career students and trainees. So much humility and many great stories. #ANES24
Terrific turnout for the @FAERanesthesia@eSASAnesthesia Day for New Researchers. 77 medical students, 10 MSTP students, 30 residents & many leading researchers from across the country here to learn about pathways to research including vulnerable discussions of failure #ASA24 👏

BWH OB anesthesiology faculty @MichaelFurdyna on etiology/management of maternal cardiac arrest during peripartum anesthetic care. (1) Etiologies multifactorial, most commonly hemorrhage vs. AFE; (2) anesthesia record tells a story that no database table can fully capture.
MPOG Research Fellowship graduate @BetaTallarico on airway practice variation (SGA vs. ETT) among obese patients across @MPOGASPIRE sites. (1) BMI threshold for ↓ SGA around ~40; (2) familiarity with SGA associated with ↓ pulmonary complications, although dissipates for ↑ BMI
Incredible learning health systems work from Drs. Matt Caldwell, @circleisclosed, and @zachll for perioperative care. Opportunities for (1) deeper understanding of resident experiences beyond case logs; (2) linkage of exam data to measure performance; (3) precision feedback.
How can anesthesiologists partner with patients and each other, to challenge pre-conceived notions of what “good” research looks like, to more effectively inform/advance perioperative care? Reflections from @neumanmd at @MPOGASPIRE retreat:
(1) Equipoise for treatment decisions exists at not only national level, but also local hospital level; consider both
(2) Advocate for the benefits of knowledge to be gained; not just risks
(3) Uncertainty of clinician engagement should be built into trial design
Can participation in quality improvement programs not only improve care processes and outcomes, but also reduce costs? @allison_janda breaks it down (and short answer is 'yes') at @MPOGASPIRE retreat.
Looking forward to the annual @MPOGASPIRE retreat, happening tomorrow in Philly (and virtually) leading in to #ASA2024! Great speakers and agenda, covering pragmatic trials, learning health systems and best of QI and research. Virtual registration at aspirecqi.org/appsuite/Retre…
Huge thanks to Peter Nagele, MD from @UChicago#anesthesia for providing a terrific keynote address for the @UMichAnesthesia annual research retreat about nitrous oxide in treatment resistant #depression —always love seeing anesthesiologists working on broad medical issues 👏
🎉🎉Congratulations to our Chad Brummett MD (@drchadb), a recipient of this year's @UM_MICHR Distinguished Clinical and Translational Research Mentor Award! The award recognizes Dr. Brummett's outstanding contributions to the research environment @UMich.
