⚽️ 🇲🇽 🇨🇦 🇺🇸 I have just had the best day on this app that I can remember. My feed, which is normally a place of grievance and doom, has been taken over entirely by people dancing. Mexicans singing in the streets. Canadians hugging strangers, which for Canadians is practically riotous behavior. Americans waving flags from countries they couldn’t have located on a map last Tuesday, and meaning it warmly. And then there’s the video attached here, which may be my favorite thing. A group of South Korean fans arrived at the stadium with tequila, were told they couldn’t bring it inside, and did the only sensible thing: they stood at the gates and drank it. All of it. Together. And then, because joy of this kind cannot be contained, they invited the Mexican fans to join in. Diplomacy at its absolute finest, conducted entirely in shots. The whole world has turned up in three countries at once, and everyone seems delighted that everyone else came. There is something quietly wonderful about football’s ability to do this. No summit achieved it. No treaty. Just a ball, and several million people who decided that today, joy was the better option. So, a small warning to those of you who follow me: the next month will contain a great deal of football. Possibly nothing but football.
