Having visited the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, I have seen firsthand what it represents to the Ukrainian people.  This historic shrine holds no military significance whatsoever — only deep cultural and religious significance. For many Ukrainians, Putin’s strike on this sacred UNESCO World Heritage site, which dates back nearly 1,000 years, is akin to a strike on the Vatican. Make no mistake: This was a deliberate attempt by Vladimir Putin to destroy Ukrainian culture and dismantle Ukrainians’ Christian beliefs. The free world must recognize this attack for what it is — a calculated effort to erase a nation's identity — and unequivocally condemn it.

There are really fewer great, funnier examples of mimesis than the history of Catholics since the 60s after the introduction of novus ordo: holding hands during the our father and doing all sorts of strange things during the sign of peace—truly a thing of mimetic beauty, which you can witness still today.

The Lavra has been attacked twice — and both times by Russians. The previous time it was damaged was during World War II, on November 3, 1941. The cathedral was mined and blown up by retreating Soviet NKVD saboteurs after German forces occupied the city. And today — on Sunday (the Lord’s Day), June 14, 2026 — it was struck again by direct Russian missile attacks. The Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra (Monastery of the Caves) is 975 years old. It is one of the oldest and most sacred monastic complexes in Eastern Europe, with its history officially dating back to 1051 AD during the era of Kyivan Rus’.

For nearly a millennium, Christians have prayed at the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra. Empires rose and fell. Wars came and went. The monastery endured. Tonight, flames rise over one of Christianity’s holiest sites after a Russian strike. This is not a war over territory - Russia is assaulting memory, identity, faith, and civilization.

This attack tonight on the Monastery by the Russians in Kyiv makes no sense. It has a parallel with the bombing of London’s St. Paul’s in 1940 by the Germans. It won’t work. Someone tell me the military necessity of the Russian attack. There is none.

I hadn't been to a Roman rite Mass in a while (two years or so), until recently. Went to a parish that was fairly close, which I knew was a bit more traditional and had a Communion rail. It was so much better, I think, than the usual lines with ECMs: reverent, efficient, natural, quiet, and prayerful. The claim that it is disruptive seems not only false but an act of overt gaslighting.
