20 minutes reading the Rust language book is magnitudes more helpful than using AI tools as a shortcut to learning Rust properly. I've been using GPT too much as a crutch for writing code quickly, rather than spending time learning languages properly like I did in the past. I'm going to start being intentional how I use GPT when working on projects - I still think it's fine to use for menial tasks that I've done 100 times in the past, but for new patterns/problems I'm going to approach it the old fashioned way (pure knowledge, understanding, and debugging). To me, this is the only way to keep my mind/skills sharp. My recommendation to junior devs is to try to avoid using AI when programming, especially early on. You won't develop the critical thinking skills that differentiate top engineers from code monkeys.
