Honoured to lead with my good friend Paul D @nswenviromedia a tour of the spectacular #AusQuaternary barrier-estuary systems & geological wonders from @CityNewcastle to @PSCouncil for the Joint National Coast to Coast & NSW Coastal Conference #nswcoastalconference @UON_research
Congratulations to the organisers and contributors of the 4th @AusYCSEC - Young Coastal Scientists & Engineers Conference. Amazing few days of next gen coastal research and translating it to shape a better future. Check it out: 🌏 ausycsec.com.au#AusYCSEC @UON_research

En route to #CoastalSediments2023 I had my first US barrier islands experience, traversing Follett’s, famous Galveston & Bolivar Peninsula in Texas. Despite reading about such settings throughout my career I was still shocked at how low and flat they are, and at the development!
While we’ve had devastating river floods in Australia in recent years, it is startling to imagine these islands completely drowned by storm surge and waves during big hurricanes, as the Ike 2008 water level record plaques show around Galveston town.
It was a tremendous honour to be awarded with @MikeKinsela the inaugural Coastal Achievement Award at the #CoastalSediments2023 conference in New Orleans this week 1/4
Our students are sea-ing science up close with experience working in the field and learning about coastal processes with @DrHannahPower and @MikeKinsela 🌊

ALT Two students are working on a science study on the sandy shores of a beach. One is writing on her notebook and the other is looking down the lens of equipments resting on a tall tripod. They are both wearing casual clothes and no shoes.
ALT A man in black shorts and a blue shirt is holding a long measuring ruler as he watches 6 people in knee deep water at the beach on a sunny day. They have various equipment to help study coastal processes.
ALT A group of students dressed in casual sun protective clothes are sitting on the sandy shores of a beach on a sunny day as they listen to a scientist dressed in navy shorts, top and cap as she points out into the water with her hand.
ALT Three students wearing swimmers are gathered on the sand as tall markers are set in a line in the ocean waters behind them.
Brilliant performance last night from @JosephTawadros, James Tawadros and the @A_C_O in the @Merrigong #Wollongong Town Hall. #Vivaldi’s Four Seasons with a Middle Eastern flavour, mixed with assorted Tawadros oud and riq delights - yum!
New #CoastSnap stations at my new locals #BarBeach & #Merewether are growing community awareness of our dynamic coasts & help Novocastrians map beach change through time. And right on time for @surfest! Well done @CityNewcastle @nswenviromedia @UNSWWRL CoastSnap.com
Big thanks to #Instagrain developers @ebgoldstein@CoastalProf & co for sharing their open-source field camera design & deep learning model for image-based grain size estimation. Students are looking forward to comparing with their lab skills!
I’m very flattered to receive the new Coastal Achievement Award at #CoastalSediments2023 conference with my famous colleague @DocHarleyMD for our work developing #CoastSnap community beach monitoring - communities understanding dynamic and changing coasts coastsnap.com
We will also present the NEW Coastal Achievement Award which recognizes spectacular contributions to #coastalscience by individuals or groups. The first award will go to @DocHarleyMD and @MikeKinsela, founders of #CoastSnap
Researchers from @Uni_Newcastle@Sydney_Uni created 3D visualisations of seafloor features around Australia, from a shipwreck to ancient dunes.
These could be used to understand the threat of tsunami, or evidence of ancient beaches and dunes. bit.ly/3wmPmJd
Up up and away! Great to get out to some beautiful tidal inlets last week with all the toys for @MaddyBroadfo's first #PhD data collection to investigate #estuary water level sensitivity to inlet morphology. Important knowledge for #coastalmanagement during #sealevelrise
