Thankfully, Mom and I survived last night’s Chicagoland tornado outbreak mostly unscathed. One hit my town and blew down some gas stations and strip malls. It actually impacted the other side of my neighborhood and hit a friend’s place that’s maybe five or six hundred yards from mine. We lost power but that was it.
Today, I was humbled by the amount of friends and neighbors who called and came by to check on us. In this era where so many people seem indifferent to those struggling around them, it’s amazing to know that none of our neighbors forgot about us on this difficult day.
Folks brought us food, batteries, phone chargers, and more, completely unprompted. We’re both cripples who need a lot of help pretty regularly and it’s comforting to know that we still live in an actual neighborhood where people look out for each other on bad days.
Some say places and neighbors like this don’t exist anymore but I’m here to tell you that they do. All is not lost in this world yet, no matter how bad the tv news looks. Right now, I’m thanking God for every bit of today.
