In today's "Behind the Care" feature, we turn the spotlight on Dr Quinton Nurse.
Quinton is a dedicated Naturopathic Doctor of the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine where he focuses on holistic healthcare and mind-body medicine.
Quinton has provided abundant health education to at-risk and marginalized groups in the community, including Indigenous communities via the province-wide initiative "Rooted", and the elderly as part of Health Canada programs across the Greater Toronto Area. This complements his history of providing care in multiple affordable care clinics, providing STEM educational outreach to over 10,000 students in underprivileged schools across the province with Perimeter Institute, as well as in healthtech at Babylon Health and Telus Health.
In his own experience, a key part of culturally appropriate care is staying aware of the potential influence that socioeconomics, lifestyle, and ethnicity have on differing mental and physical health challenges. He presents a quote from African-American Social Psychologist Jennifer L. Eberhardt:“We choose what to pay attention to based on the ideas that we already have in our heads”, and urges us to take each individual as just that, an individual, while also recognizing the influence of environment and cultural differences without bias.
