I was against the long-term occupation of Afghanistan because their population was scarcely literate and their society was extremely tribal. In other words, any effort to ‘nation-build’ there would take a damn millennium. That is not the case in Iran. The country has a history of secular governance and a population with enough education to handle it. What’s more, a significant part of that population wants a return to pre-Islamic theocracy. (Polling is notoriously difficult in Iran, but the streets running with the blood of Iranians trying to overthrow their government is a clue). This idiotic dichotomy of you either want to take this deal or you just want to keep killing Iranians is equal parts stupid and insulting. That it’s coming from a well educated and highly intelligent Vice President tells me the problem is not intellectual. Vance knows better. He just thinks he’s winning future GOP primaries by courting an increasingly isolationist youth demo. He’s as amoral as Trump, only smarter, which is downright frightening.
