I one read a helicopter pilot's description of what a pilot has to learn and master to keep a helicopter up in the air. I decided at that moment that I also would never, ever get in a helicopter.
In my early 20s, one of my roommates was a pilot for Delta Airlines, with thousands of hours flying commercial jets and many other kinds of aircraft under his belt.
I once asked him randomly if he'd ever flown a helicopter. He immediately stopped smiling, looked at me with a super serious expression on his face, and said:
"There is no amount of money you could pay me to get inside a helicopter. Never, ever accept a ride in one."
I took this as a cosmic sign that if I ever decided to fly in a helicopter, I would die on my very first trip. To this day I've never flown in one, and never will.
