In Dec 2023, I randomly decided to do a road trip across West Africa solo. I started in Lagos then passed through Benin. Continued to Togo, Burkina Faso, Mali, Senegal, The Gambia, Guinea-Bissau, Guinea-Conakry then took the ferry to Freetown Sierra leone then back to Lagos

Almost every non-Nigerian I have introduced to Nigerian food likes Egusi soup a lot. Egusi is a fav of mine but what about it makes it so appealing across board?

USA. A Mexican restaurant. We had not yet ordered anything, and the food was already arriving. Chips. Salsa. Unrequested. Free. I stopped the waiter. "We have not earned these." "They just come with the table, man." They come with the TABLE. In my land, hospitality is a debt. Every gift creates an obligation, weighed carefully, returned in the proper season with interest of feeling. Here, the gift arrives before you have even proven you can pay for dinner. This is not an appetizer. This is a declaration: we trust you. Eat. I ate with the gravity the moment deserved. And then — I must report this calmly — the basket emptied, and a new one appeared. "Did we…?" "Refill," the waiter said. "It's bottomless." Bottomless. They have wells of salsa. The supply lines of this nation are beyond anything my ancestors imagined. My friend warned me. "Don't fill up on chips, dude." Too late. I had accepted three baskets. Honor demanded each one be finished — an unfinished gift is an insult. By the time my actual food arrived, I was a ruined man. I was not hungry. I was not comfortable. I had been defeated by a courtesy. Generosity that arrives before the request cannot be repaid. It can only be survived. I know the rule now. I have made my peace with the basket. One basket. Two at the most. Who am I deceiving. There is no number of baskets I would refuse. The trust of a nation is in that salsa, and I intend to honor all of it.

I’m excited to meet my summer love of my life this year. We fall in love immediately, do all the real lovers things, give each other custom jewelry, create fun memories then we say good bye and never see each other again. Always a vibe.

I’ve discovered Ella Langley from @FreddyLA7 and honestly her voice is in trouble for my next multi-city road trip. What a gem

New additions to the library. I tend to always give out the first two whenever I buy them. I’m most excited for my collector’s copy of the classics 😅

This trip and the documentation is so wholesomely cute. There’s no frills, or editing. Just a guy discovering a country through one of the best ways to do it - a road trip with no rigid itinerary
The best discovery of our road trip has been a musician called Ella Langley. We had never heard of her before, but after hearing her on pretty much every country radio station, we’ve become big fans. She’s basically the soundtrack of our trip.

That 10,000 hours heuristics is so true. I’ve put in those hours plus change in scoping out destinations .. that all I need is a few random pictures from a place and in 3 guesses, I’ll tell you the exact country (sometimes city) where it was taken. (please don’t test me🙂‍↕️)

I’m so in awe of builders. Like this thing exists in your mind and then all of a sudden it is concrete, it is alive and you share it with the world. Creating slices of joy, convenience & gratitude for strangers. That is magic. And you are awesome

Never craved a second passport like I have this week. Dear Yemoja, this cannot be the life you planned for your daughter. Somebody asked for my urine because I want to apply for visa and you are letting this happen? Arise and fight my battles!
