Could you teach without grades? Could they learn without grades? Without grades. For better or worse? #ReimaginED

What has life taught you about… being impulsive? Posting a daily question to inspire reflection and connection. We all learn from experience. We all are human. What might we all learn from our experiential existence? What has life taught you? #ExperienceHumanity

If our data is only as reliable as our assessments, then… Yeah. Think about that one for a while. There’s probably more to the data story than we’re willing to admit. All data should probably come with an asterisk. And we know it. We can do better. #Project180

I teach English. I teach kids. I teach humans. I am learning with humans. We are learning. The evolution of my teaching perspective over my 30 years in the classroom. I am still learning to teach.

“The data…” Ya need a new narrative hook. That tale’s gone stale. The bread crumbs are still lying on the ground. YEARS of data and what? We have kids who are above, at, and below? “The data…” We stopped listening. A long time ago. We can do better.

“The data…” “The kids…” Approach determines response. Proceed accordingly.

For the 30th time in as many years, I bid a group of kids adieu. It hasn’t gotten any easier. The price of connections.

This doesn’t mean I love it any less. In fact, it’s likely that I (still) love it so deeply, dearly that makes it so hard. Was called everything from right on to a whiny idiot yesterday. Right, wrong (or idiotic), it’s still my truth. And I’m still facing it. And not alone.

I don’t know if teaching’s ever been harder. I’ve only taught for 30 years. So, I can only speak to that timeframe. It’s never been harder.

Yes, everyone has been a student. No, not everyone has been a teacher. Only teachers have been on both sides of the room. Please, then, everyone quit acting like you know the job and suggesting how you’d do it better. Those who can teach.
