ALT Sergeant Jose Barraza of the Monument Police Department was arrested on charges related to domestic violence and child abuse by the Elbert County Sheriff’s Office on Wednesday, June 18th. Sergeant Barraza has been employed by the Town of Monument Police Department since April 4, 2022. Any information regarding the pending criminal charges against Sergeant Barraza must be requested from the Elbert County Sheriff’s Office. The Monument Police Department has placed Sergeant Barraza on administrative leave pending the resolution of criminal charges and an internal affairs investigation. All members of the Monument Police Department are held to the highest standards, and allegations against members of the department will be thoroughly investigated and resolved while protecting the same due process afforded to anyone accused of a crime.

On February 14, 2025 the Monument Police Department launched an investigation following a report of sexual assault. One the identified suspects is 19 year-old Spencer Adam Johnson Johnson has since been charged with kidnapping and multiple sexual offenses and is currently in custody in Texas a wedding extradition back to Colorado. During the course of the investigation, detectives uncovered additional allegations against Johnson, some dating back more than four years. Based on this information, investigators believe there may be other victims who have not yet come forward. This remains an active and ongoing investigation.
