The FULL Anthropic Fable timeline
The FULL Anthropic Fable timeline, as it stands:
- Jun 9: Anthropic launches Fable 5 and Mythos 5, its two most powerful models.
- Thu night (Jun 11): Amazon calls administration officials with a report showing it jailbroke and accessed parts of Mythos, framed as a national security threat. CEO Andy Jassy in direct contact with the White House.
- Fri morning (Jun 12): Senior officials huddle. National Cyber Director Sean Cairncross, Commerce Sec Howard Lutnick, Treasury Sec Scott Bessent, Chief of Staff Susie Wiles. Calls from Amazon and at least 5 other firms follow.
- Fri 5:21pm ET: Commerce sends an export directive ordering Anthropic to cut off Fable 5 and Mythos 5 from all foreign nationals, including its own foreign-national staff.
- Fri night: Unable to comply selectively, Anthropic shuts both models down for everyone. Three days after launch.
The dispute:
White House says controls were a last resort after hours of begging Anthropic to cooperate, and that Dario Amodei was at a wellness retreat and unreachable.
Anthropic calls that absolutely false, says it responded within 75 minutes, and that the government never provided details on the threat.
The reason keeps shifting:
First a narrow jailbreak (ask the model to read a codebase and flag flaws), which Anthropic says is minor and reproducible on other models.
Then, per Semafor, concerns that a China-linked group had accessed Mythos.
The Information reports the controls are unlikely to extend to other AI companies.
