In a new randomized controlled trial, skipping breakfast did not clearly worsen mood, sleepiness, or cognitive function in teenagers (13–15 y/o) when compared to regular low-GI breakfast (w/ or w/o nitrate supplementation). nature.com/articles/s41538-0…

This crossover trial found that a vegan diet, but not a Mediterranean diet, substantially reduced people's estimated intake of advanced glycation end products (AGEs). I think the jury is still out on the harms of AGEs, but interesting data nonetheless. pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/3917…

A new study analyzed a single dataset on red meat and mortality 1,208 different ways In an article for @Examinecom, I discuss why researchers did this, what it tells us about epidemiology, and why it doesn't tell us much about red meat and health. examine.com/research-feed/st…

I found another AI-generated garbage diagram in a scientific journal. It’s entirely gibberish and features anatomically incorrect limbs with too many bones. ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/article…

In case anyone is interested, at @Examinecom we have a guide called “How to Read a Scientific Study”. It’s a great surface-level resource for catching study limitations that aren’t as obvious as AI-generated mutant leg bones. examine.com/guides/how-to-re…

Most people who go on diets see weight loss plateau as time goes on. Could switching up your diet prevent this? Maybe not. In a new study, diet-induced weight loss showed expected slowing, even as folks changed diets after 6 months (from low-fat to low-carb, or vice versa).

I think this is objectively wrong (sorry Brady!). There is extensive data that smoking increases mortality risk substantially more than sitting: pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/3025…

"Sitting is the new smoking." I think sitting is worse. Based on some analyses, the mortality risk reduction associated with being physically active (-66%) is greater than the risk reduction associated with not smoking (-38%): sciencedirect.com/science/ar…

Is yogurt overrated for metabolic health? In a new 16-week randomized controlled trial, yogurt was not clearly better than milk at improving health metrics like body fat, liver fat, blood pressure, blood lipids, or insulin resistance. pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/3823…

I’m excited to share my review of the book How Not to Diet! HNTD makes a myriad of claims — with haphazard scientific accuracy — to rationalize an overly complicated diet that nonetheless seems conducive to weight loss and fairly healthy. redpenreviews.org/reviews/ho…

In a new clinical trial, a Mediterranean diet led to impressive improvements in IBS symptoms (despite no difference in FODMAP or fiber intake). I think this could be a big step forward for IBS management. Check out my article on study for @Examinecom. examine.com/research-feed/st…

“Using the structured approach to assess concordance, 15 (19.0%) out of 79 analysed diet-disease outcome pairs were concordant.”
In line with findings of previous studies from the same group, this meta-research study suggests that on average, randomized controlled trials and cohort studies are likely to have similar effect estimates.

A cohort study with 59,033 women found that eating pan-fried red meat was associated with a lower risk of T2 diabetes... ...if participants cooked their meat in vegetable oil. (sharing bc I found it interesting, but I wouldn't read too much into it) ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/article…
