One year ago, the Hands Off Jáchal Assembly took 71k signatures to Buenos Aires to call for judicial action to ensure justice for the repeated toxic spills at the Veladero mine. They are still fighting for that justice to be served. @jachalnosetoca jachalnosetoca.com/php/artic…

Rather than opening poorly regulated lithium mines in Serbia, let's expand public transportation, recycle EV batteries, and improve mining standards to protect the environment, communities and workers. We can't mine our way to clean energy. nature.com/articles/s41598-0…

Another reported killing near Barrick's North Mara #gold mine in #Tanzania this past weekend. See the distressing video below. Multiple accounts say that a local man was killed on school grounds by police in a mine-related security operation. A credible investigation is needed.

"Mining Watch isn’t the only party claiming it was given short shrift at Barrick’s AGM. Earthworks' @MorrillJB wrote in an e-mail to The Globe and Mail that a question asked by community members from Argentina @jachalnosetoca that was critical of its Veladero mine ...was ignored"
In a virtual meeting, @BarrickGold CEO was asked: "How many people have been shot and wounded or killed by police contracted to the mine this year alone, and when will you stop the killing and stop contracting police to guard this mine?” So, the moderator changed the question👇

At annual meeting, activist asks Barrick Gold's CEO how many Tanzanians were killed or wounded by police at a Barrick mine. But because it was a virtual meeting, a company rep was able to revise the question to a vague query about human rights. theglobeandmail.com/business…

There's no such thing as a safe or 'green' mine. #Mining #ClimateEmergency #environment
Barrick’s behavior isn’t surprising. Communities have struggled for years to access information about the company’s operations and raise their legitimate concerns around its impacts. This is another example of Barrick’s lack of transparency and unwillingness to engage.
