'DR.STONE' Manga Artist Boichi shared his thoughts on readers who say they cannot afford manga, discussing the financial struggles of both fans and creators while highlighting issues of access and pricing "Most Japanese readers do not have much money either. Most Japanese mangaka do not have much money. Most aspiring manga artists do not have much money." "Many readers carefully save a small allowance to buy a single tankōbon volume." "They do it because they want to support creators. They do it because they want manga to continue existing. They do it because if nobody pays, manga cannot continue to be made." "Manga did not become successful because Japan was rich. Manga grew during the 1950s, when Japan was still a very poor country." "It grew because people chose to buy manga. Because they valued it. Because they believed it was worth supporting." "Of course, there are exceptions. There are always exceptions. Some people genuinely face circumstances far more difficult than most of us can imagine. I do not want to dismiss those realities." "I began my career as a poor mangaka in a country that was still poor. I care deeply about people who struggle financially. I am on their side." "Many creators sacrificed comforts in order to draw manga." "The real problem is not whether people have money to buy manga. The real problem is that many people have no practical way to buy it." "Officially licensed foreign editions are often far too expensive for readers around the world. I believe that is a genuine problem."

🇬🇧 UK Government Sidesteps UAE’s Role in Sudan Mercenary Pipeline The UK government declined to name the United Arab Emirates when pressed in Parliament about Colombian mercenaries who transited through UAE bases before deploying for Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces, offering only vague condemnation of “external support.” ➤ Asked by Labour MP Anneliese Dodds about the reports, Foreign Office minister Chris Elmore said on June 8 that the government remains “extremely concerned” about “external support” to Sudan’s combatants and has sanctioned 24 individuals and entities, without naming the UAE. ➤ HRW researcher Joey Shea said the government had responded “with the same tired & shamefully vague response,” adding: “The UAE continues to act with impunity and the UK remains disgracefully silent on UAE abuses as they conclude FTA (free trade agreement) negotiations with the GCC.” ➤ An HRW report found Colombian contractors, hired by an Abu Dhabi-based firm with ties to the UAE ruling family, were trained at and transited through UAE bases before fighting alongside the RSF, which stands accused of genocide. ➤ Britain’s omission mirrors a broader Western reluctance to publicly hold the UAE — a key arms customer and ally — accountable for its role in a war that has killed hundreds of thousands and driven the world’s largest humanitarian and displacement crisis.
In response to a question about the role of UAE military bases in facilitating the transfer of Colombian fighters to support the RSF in Sudan, the UK govt responds with the same tired & shamefully vague response… referencing only “external support” & failing to call out the UAE directly. 3 years into Sudan’s devastating war, the UAE continues to act with impunity and the UK remains disgracefully silent on UAE abuses as they conclude FTA negotiations with the GCC. @CPJElmore questions-statements.parliam…
