One of the most famous expressions of conservative thought is William F. Buckley saying that he wanted to "Stand athwart history yelling Stop." Which is a good line, but if you actually think about it, makes zero sense. You can't stop history, and you can't yell at it, either.

Anyway, just a reminder that this is considered by many to be a brilliant quotation, and is frequently repeated.

As far as the affirmative action (AA) ruling goes, supporters of AA shouldn't blame the court, they should blame the schools. Whether AA is good policy is debatable, but the way it was administered at top schools was obviously and transparently racist against Asian students.

AA is unpopular, deeply flawed, and (often) quite racist. Supporters should have fixed the flaws themselves before the court had to step in. Instead, admissions offices doubled down on the anti-Asian racism, and now race-based AA is outlawed.

And the (mostly) progressive people running those admissions offices might want to take a step back and ask themselves how they ended up in the position of arguing that it was necessary for the good of society to discriminate against Asian people.

My wife likes to listen to NPR, so it's often on when I start the car. The problem is that the NPR house style of talking makes my skin crawl. I can't quite put my figure on it, but it's like listening to the most smug, irritating person imaginable giving you a lecture.

With the Wagner revolt in Russia, it's a reminder to me of the need for patience. Autocratic regimes are fragile and prone to collapsing in crises. But they can still hold on for decades, which to any given person may be an entire lifetime. It's hard to wait that long for justice

Sitting at home with COVID, I've had a chance to listen a few more times to the new @JasonIsbell album. Weathervanes didn't catch me as quickly as Reunions (Overseas is tough to top), but as I've listened more, and dug into the lyrics ... these are some good songs to cry to

Cast Iron Skillet? White Beretta? When We Were Close? King of Oklahoma? Absolutely brutally honest songs. Really have to appreciate the man's craft.

Spent half the week solo parenting while my wife has COVID. Now right when she's ready to stop isolating, I've got it, so we're switching. Guess it's time to start tweeting more.

My beloved @Athletics have made a conscious decision to become the worst team in league history while also betraying their fans, so I can't support them any longer and don't want to wear their gear in public. Decided to support the @NLBMuseumKC instead.

Got this sweet 1924 Kansas City Monarchs hat, honoring their victory in the first Negro Leagues World Series. Hope to be able to get to KC someday to see the museum in person and hopefully meet Mr. Bob Kendrick. ⚾🧢😀 @nlbmprez shop.nlbm.com/collections/ca…

Replying to @Athletics
@Athletics Extremely sad and disappointed. I've spent my whole life loving this team, and the current ownership and management has driven it straight into the ground, absolutely alienating the fan base as an excuse to abandon Oakland.

Well, congratulations, you've done it. You'll get a shiny new stadium in Vegas, but you will have zero loyal fans. You're never getting another dime of my money. At least I'll keep the good memories and try to forget the bad.

Started watching The Bear with my wife last night, and it occurs to me that one of my most blue collar opinions (and I'm not blue collar in any way) is that fancy food is objectively worse than well-prepared "regular" food.

A $150 meal shouldn't be 10x as interesting, but only half as good and half as filling, as a $12 burrito.

And yes, there are certainly dishes at fancy restaurants that I would love, and which might be worth the high cost, to me. But most of it is just something I don't get, so I'll leave it to foodies who do enjoy it.
