Hey @openupresources community - can anyone tell me a benefit to switching from tape diagrams to hangers in 7th grade unit 6? Why switch it up after they get comfortable with tape diagrams? You can show balance with either type of diagram. #OpenUpMath
A3. We discuss the quote, "The name on the front of the jersey is what matters, not the name on the back," and how it applies to our classroom. They have to care about the learning of the person next to them as much as their own. #openupmath

A3. I also tell ss EVERYDAY that the person who's doing the most talking is doing the most learning. It's their job to involve everyone in the conversation and make those conversations meaningful. Not a routine, just a constant conversation. #openupmath

Which makes mathematics the most honorable thing one might experience in this world. As Celine in Before Sunrise would say "The answer lies in the attempt". The answer to why we study mathematics is all about the attempt.

Hey, @openupresources and #openupmath community - Does anyone know if the PBS Distance Learning Support videos can be accessed anywhere other than Vimeo? Our district has blocked Vimeo, but these videos are great resources for those not in the classroom.
Anyone in #openupmath community struggle with a big jump in 7th Grade, Unit 6? Ss go from using diagrams to reason through eqs and then are quickly expected to solve eqs without? Am I missing something? Am I the only one with this issue?

The DNA of any two people on Earth is 99.6% identical. (Entry #22: between2numbers.com/21-30.ht…) We can help Ss understand that race is a social construct, not biological or genetic. Happy Friday, everyone. ❤️

A powerful call to action: "Interrogate individual and societal beliefs underlying the deficit views about mathematics learning and children with specific attention to race/ethnicity, class, gender, culture, and language." #TODOSSummerRead

"Mathematics teachers and leaders must self-reflect on privileges and obstacles in their own mathematics histories, build and exchange ideas, and expand the pool of knowledge resources by partnering with families and communities to make change." #TODOSSummerread

A3: This is a situational question as well as a culture question. I don't have it figured out in the least! So much work to do. #OpenUpMath
