“For students in rural areas with no private school option, voucher programs simply mean there is less to spend on public schools, which leads to teacher shortages, fewer educational opportunities, and worse building maintenance.” epi.org/blog/voucher-program…

This is exactly why we have to find balance between chasing down cheating and cultivating a genuine desire to learn. Technology will always outpace our detection methods. Culture is the only long-term answer.
Aww man. One of the best anti-cheating measures is gone.

I had a student in my graduate program who was a PoC who was “passed on.” I told her she would need to drop my class so she could take a remedial reading/writing class. Her mother with the DOC made an appointment with the Dean who told me I had to come. I asked mom to read the paper I brought outload. She did and said this is garbage. She asked me who wrote this PoS. I said your daughter. She said, this is not even literate. I agreed. She asked her daughter what was going on. Her daughter cried and then the first truth came out. That’s the best she could do. A college graduate who was illiterate because her mother came in and threatened every teacher to pass her on. I said to the mother, if your daughter puts in the effort and brings her verbal up, she can retake my class and I’ll waive the fees provided the Dean agrees. The Dean agreed. That young lady took two years to get up to speed and she retake my class. She now has a PhD and I promise you she has no attitude and she tells this story to all her students. Do not pass a failing student on. It always comes back to hurt the student. 🥰

If only we could send high school graduates to college with strong math skills….there wouldn’t have to be a discussion on terminating math intensive STEM majors…and the worst part of this is the effect canceling physical sciences degree programs will have on producing the future STEM workforce…..
This frustrating situation that will limit opportunities for STEM majors in the State University System is on my mind today. bridgetotomorrow.wordpress.c…

The more I dive into the literature, we have to STOP pushing students forward in math if they do not have solid foundational skills in algebra. It's almost impossible to fix algebra and trigonometry foundations when a student lands in calculus. #STEMpipelineProblems

Almost a data point in Long et al. (2009) on Florida's college math readiness gaps. As a grad student diving into Florida's math data, the problem’s worse & not just FL’s. Weak high school math prep is choking the STEM pipeline. How do we fill the gaps in Florida's high school math education? #FLMathEducation #FLSTEMPipeline #FLSTEMEquity Long, M.
